Recruitment and Triathlon – are they really that different?

Here is Peter’s latest update from events of the past week . . .

I am training for IM UK 70.3 in June 2012.

At the moment this means that every week I will run 4 times, swim 3 times and cycle (indoors on a trainer) 3 times. This week my training will consist of 30 miles running, 100 miles on the bike and 3 miles of swimming.

Tiring.

I’m struck by the similarities between my Triathlon habit and my business.

In both triathlon and recruitment you are directly rewarded, in large part, for the effort you put in - and your own ability to direct this effort, in a smart fashion, is key.

When I plan a structured training schedule for a key race, I start by working back from race day by 6 months (or more).

This is identical to project planning a search-project (backwards) from the interview and decision schedule. (more…)

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON (at least in the world of Software Sales Recruitment)

We have a big sign in our office - keep calm and carry on.  In these cynical times many may find the sentiment to be a bit cheesy; letting off a bit of steam is not a bad thing right?

I was faced with a classic recruitment situation this week:  My applicant was being offered a great job (and a super package) by a long-standing and trusted client.  I knew it was competitive to get the guy (it usually is, for the very good applicants) and I knew we were not offering the most money.  But we thought we had the more exciting opportunity, the applicant had verbally indicated he would be accepting our role, and the champagne was on ice (if not quite opened!).

At the 11th hour the opposition improved their (already bigger) offer significantly and as we were at the top of our budget already, we could not move the offer (even if we had wanted to).  We lost the deal.

To set the scene…..nearly every week-end in the summer I spend my days at a lake in Yateley, Hampshire where Chris (boyfriend) and his brother (Phil) own a jet ski and where we all wakeboard.

“With recent stock market nervousness reflecting the global sovereign-debt issue there has understandably been some renewed caution within EMEA enterprise software sales jobs recruitment market.

Having traded through two previous market dips it’s clear to me that a wise approach is to focus on core markets and tried and trusted relationships.

With these ideas in mind it is exciting to see clients from the past take up new roles in recent weeks. I have been briefed on two exciting projects by newly appointed VP’s of EMEA.

UK Jobs grow for 25th consecutive month according to KPMG / REC report

Leading multi-sector recruiter, Jenrick, is pleased to report The UK jobs market remains “robust”, according to the latest Recruitment & Employment Confederationkpmg-rec-report-on-jobs (REC)/KPMG labour report.

The key highlight of the report was that the UK jobs market experienced growth for the 25th consecutive month, giving further evidence to the economic recovery of the UK.

KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s (REC) guide to the labour market revealed that the strongest growth in demand for skilled workers was for people in IT jobs, with specific reference to those professionals who are skilled in IT security, SAP and enterprise software. (more…)
