How To Get Your Message Across with a Story

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Think of any film you’ve seen that grabbed you.  What about a TV series you follow, or a book you read and re-read or share?  They’ll all have grabbed your kay-white-communication-trainerattention and kept it with a story.

The story that’s threaded and woven throughout any attention-grabbing book or film is what we remember, long after the titles and credits.  Stories have the power to move us and make us act.

We all tell stories – to ourselves, to our friends and families and to our clients, customers and colleagues.  That phrase “so what’s the story on that?” – we want to know the story.

Vince Cable: British manufacturing – “growing at more than twice the speed achieved pre-recession, in 2006.”

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

I saw this very positive report in The Telegraph, from Vince Cable the Business Secretary, regarding the strong position of the UK’s manufacturing industry, and the vince-cable-business-secretary-uk-manufacturing-news positive impact it is making within the UK’s economic recovery, especially in relation to the UK engineering jobs market:

This summer I have seen at first hand some of the signs of British industrial excellence which belie the common narrative of pessimism and decline captured in the phrase “we don’t make things anymore”.

In my job as Business Secretary I get to see the machine makers who export to Japan, the cycle company which exports to China, the car manufacturers who sell engines to Germany, the food companies who out-compete the French, the rebirth of British motorcycle manufacturing, and much more.

Britain is still one of the world’s largest manufacturers and, although much reduced, the shape of manufacturing in the economy is about the same (11pc) as for France and the US. And there is real growth despite the difficulties in our main EU and US markets with 3.6pc manufacturing growth in the last year, more than twice the growth achieved pre-recession in 2006. (more…)
