It’s often the last thing on your mind and the final thing you do (if you do it at all). The holiday time can be a frenetic build up to the last day in the office and
suddenly it’s handover time. It’s really easy to either leave this important piece completely and ‘hope for the best’ or to do it in 30 seconds and think it’ll be good enough.
The ‘important piece’ I’m referring to is this. How you decide (or if you decide) to manage your emails and inbox whilst you’re on holiday.
You’ll notice I said ‘how you decide’ because it is a decision you make and it’s one that affects the quality of your holiday and the ease of your ‘re-entry’ after your holiday.
If you’re travelling on business it’s different. Keeping in touch via your phone/remote email is easy enough now and a gap in timezones is usually manageable. There are still some steps you can take to make that easier and these are steps which buy you a huge amount of credit from those who are emailing you.

We were recently forwarded a very pertinent article, written b
y ere.net, regarding counter-offers and why candidates should never accept one. Here is the article:
For the sake of this article I’m going to assume you know how to qualify your candidates from the moment you speak to them until they’ve signed the offer letter and started. I’m going to assume you’ve been communicating effectively with them throughout every step of the process and have been asking quality questions to ensure you’re not getting “sunshine blown up your skirt.”
There’s nothing 100% foolproof and guaranteed, but good methods of pre-qualifying candidates regarding counteroffers will make your life less stressful and more financially rewarding. In addition, if you are straight in your qualifying methods you may even weed out the candidate who would accept the counteroffer and possibly leave you hanging.
First, I know the word “never” is a strong one. I don’t use it lightly or without substantial consideration as my world, both personal and professional, is gray. In this case I believe accepting a counteroffer is positive in a fraction of the cases and it’s just not worth the risk.

Congratulations to the Jenrick IT team, on receiving an extremely complimentary testimonial regarding a recent Service Desk Analyst recruitment assignment:
A leading cloud computing and virtualisation services provider, based in Central London, urgently needed a Service Desk Analyst.
The Jenrick IT team had already worked with the company on several occasions over the last 6 months.
On this occasion, the client was confident that from previous placement records, the Jenrick team could deliver a fast and efficient service that they urgently required.
The length of time from initial contact with the client to placing a new candidate took just over 1 week.
Client Testimonial:
“Working with Jenrick has been a refreshing experience. I have not come across an IT recruitment consultancy who is such a pleasure to work with as they are.
They make the whole process of recruiting technical staff, which can be a challenge, an enjoyable one. Jenrick commits to timescales, do their utmost to understand the business and requirements for the roles.
I appreciate that there is usually one main point of contact, rather than having to liase with more than one person, like with most other recruitment agencies – which can be frustrating.
I also value how the Jenrick team make an effort to visit our company to gain a fuller understanding of our business structure; this definitely has assisted in them sourcing candidates who are well-matched to our business.
The consultants at Jenrick are attentive without being over bearing and nothing is too much trouble. I would be happy to recommend Jenrick to anyone, without hesitation.”

Congratulations to Lindsay Hill, Business Development
Consultant at Jenrick IT, on receiving an extremely complimentary testimonial regarding a recent Swift Technical Consultant recruitment assignment:
A Leading Software Solutions Company based in London was seeking a candidate to fill a Swift Technical Consultant job role, due to company expansion.
Lindsay Hill, Business Development Consultant at Jenrick IT, was quick to respond to the Client’s request, identifying 3 candidates who all possessed experience in Swift Alliance Access / Swift Alliance Gateway.
Two, of the three, were interviewed with one of them successfully gaining the job role.
Client Testimonial:
‘Jenrick’s service is always superb and very professional.
Their attention to detail is very good – they only send across CV’s that are relevant to the job role and the type of person we are looking for meaning we don’t waste time wading through a mountain of CV’s our end.”

Here is an interesting insight into a commercial marketing technology that has been huge in Japan for the last decade, finally making moves into the UK – yet, being applied in a completely different manner.
QR Codes are one of the fastest emerging technologies and have become considered the most flexible forms of marketing and communication to hit the mainstream in recent years.
For those of you unfamiliar with QR Codes, they have been around for a number of years, becoming commonplace in everyday life in the Far-East and Japan, where you’d find them on everything from ID badges to food packaging.
In the UK and Europe they are rapidly being adopted and used in a huge amount of different ways at an exponential rate.

By Jane Stevens
Following on from my last Blog article relating to AWR (Agency Workers Regulations), I have continued to follow developments closely through market commentators, umbrella companies, the BIS and employment law experts.
To re-cap, for those who are not completely aware of the build-up regarding this legislation, The Agency Workers Directive was passed into European Law in 2008. At this point the UK then had to adopt a version of this (the UK version being called Agency Workers Regulations – AWR) - in fact all EU Countries will have to implement their version of this legislation by December 2011. AWR comes into effect in this country on 1 October 2011.

For all engineers employed within the Food Manufacturing industry, we saw this encouraging article (on the Food Manufacture website) regarding the future of
the industry:
MP John Stevenson admits that Westminster has under-estimated the importance of food manufacturing in times past, but believes that times are changing.
As chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Food & Drink Manufacturing Group, Stevenson accepted that the industry had sometimes been under-represented by Westminster politicians.
He said:
“But I think that is changing. There’s recognition that the food and drink industry survived the recession relatively well. It’s an important part of our economy and it employs a heck of a lot of people. Every part of the country has large or small manufacturer.
“I think it’s rising up the agenda. There are quite a lot of issues surrounding the industry such as sustainability and health.”
Made in Britain
Parliamentarians are being urged to nominate their products for a government-led scheme celebrating the UK’s manufacturing expertise. The Made by Britain list will eventually feature one product for every constituency in the country.
