Clinical Statistician Jobs Market Update - Oct 2009

The following market update has been kindly provided by Lindsay Hill, an IT Clinical Statistician recruitment expert.Lindsay Hill - Clinical IT Specialist

Lindsay is very pleased to feedback to everyone concerned, that the Clinical Statistician Jobs Market has continued to thrive, in contrary to much of the macro economic jobs market, following on from her previous market reviews on the Clinical IT Job Market.

Lindsay has highlighted a few key reasons for this continued buoyancy, including;

  1. Increase in global clinical trials - there has been a notable activity increase in global clinical trials, some in response to direct virus growth (H1N1 virus being a perfect example) and also due to general admission that pharmaceutical companies has fallen behind in general virus protection research and development
  2. Mergers / Acquisitions / Partnerships - companies within the sector have also experienced activity associated with joint partners, whether this is in the form of mergers or simply joint ventures. The costs associated with research and development are extremely high. Link this to the lengthy timescales of bringing a product to market and many companies are left without the required cashflow to enable this to function. Therefore, jointly funded partnerships are becoming more popular.

So, both of these factors are fuelling activity within this sector resulting in increased demand for skilled Clinical Professionals.

What types of jobs are available?

There are several related jobs that we have been placing professional within over the last quarter, including;

Which phases are in demand?

The roles that we have spoken of in the above list can also be broken down in even more detail for those Professionals with a Pre-Clinical, or Phases 1, 2, 3, or 4, background.

We tend to find that Pre-Clinical is the most rare skillset to find, and therefore in greatest demand, followed by the early stages (ie. 1 and 2 in particular). Candidates falling into these categories would have a range of attractive job opportunities available to them.

Contract or Permanent?

Historically the job market for this sector is driven by permanent vacancies, however within the last 12 months we have seen an increase in contract positions (directly related to the growth in partnership research projects).

What skills and backgrounds to candidates possess who are placed in these positions?

We find that nearly all the candidates are extremely well educated, with many either having had papers published already or planning to do so in the near future.

In addition, we have found that more and more doctors are moving away from hospitals, both private and public sectors.
