This was the specific feature page from Time Magazine, on The Catlin Arctic Survey, following on from our article titled Heroes of the Environment 2009.
Scientists know that global warming is thinning the Arctic ice cap. They’re just not sure how fast. Some researchers think there could be ice-free summers at the top of the world within four years; others say it’ll take a century. (more…)

How many of us out there hate that one sound that signals your day is about to start. That sound that reminds us that we have to head off to the same boring job we’ve wanted to quit so badly. When you hear this dreaded alarm sound do you ever thing about going to a different job? Not necessarily one that makes you a huge amount of money or provides you with fame and glory, but a job that you never thought anyone could have?
With the rising popularity of shows like Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel, we are starting to open our eyes the gamut of possibilities when it comes to employment. However we shouldn’t just focus on dirty jobs, but focus our attention on jobs that are just plain weird! (more…)

Jenrick CPI has reason to believe that part of the government strategy to revive it’s coffers for 2010 will be to re-visit IR35. HMRC will be keen to find a route to maximise return to the Treasury in light of the announcement by the government of major cuts in public expenciture.
This was backed up by a recent interview with a tax inspector…….
IR35 is likely to be high on HMRC’s agenda this autumn as, following a lull of 18 months, limited company contractors will once more be in the firing line, warns former HMRC manager and IR35 expert Kate Cottrell of Bauer & Cottrell. (more…)

Forget caller ID. A coming wave of “social” mobile phones is likely to tell you everything you ever wanted to know and more about the person calling you.
An application called Robo.to, available in the fourth quarter on the iPhone and handsets that run Google’s Android operating system, offers a stream of information about callers, including personal videos, photos and their current location. (more…)

Jenrick CPI (Specialist IT Recruitment Consultancy) is pleased to report continued demand for both contract and permanent IT resource.
“The market has certainly picked up in the last 2 months and the indications from all of our clients is that this will continue until the end of the year. We are already having to increase our internal teams to cope with the demand” - Philip Fanthom (MD).
This was further borne out in a recent article posted on ContractorUK, suggesting that IT experts are amongst the safest groups in which to be working. (more…)

I have been working on the following research paper to help jobseekers
understand the key requirements and skills they are expected to possess in order to develop their career within the Gaming Industry, in response to the growth we have experienced within Video Game Jobs in London.
I started researching this paper in response to the increasing number of requests for information from young IT professionals asking for insights and advice.
It is clear that the Video Game Industry has a constant demand for Game Designers, C++ Programmers and 3D Artists with 3DS Max or Maya, yet from a candidate perspective, what can enable them to stand out from the competition? (more…)

Thanks to the efforts of Central Banks and Governments around the world in the form of massive interest rate cuts, quantitative easing and huge fiscal stimulus packages economic activity has finally pulled out of the nosedive that it spiralled into.
There has been a significant pick-up in global purchasing managers’ indices as companies start to replenish their depleted stocks. There has also been a rise in business and consumer confidence. Credit markets are beginning to thaw and there is evidence of a return to banking profitability along with stabilisation in house prices on both sides of the Atlantic. (more…)

This article from Contractor Calculator is a must read for all IT Contractors.
Umbrella company contractors could be in line for further flak from the taxman if they find themselves in the ‘crossfire’ between their umbrellas and the taxman. Contractors are even being encouraged to ‘shop’ their umbrella companies over things like being too free and easy with their expenses dispensations.
HMRC has just released a briefing – Revenue & Customs Brief 50/09 – in which it unambiguously announces its intention to step up investigations of what it perceives as abuses of expenses and dispensation rules by umbrella companies. (more…)
