APSCo short listed for two Trade Association Forum best practice awards

The Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) has been Jenrick are leading members of APSCoshortlisted for two of the prestigious Trade Association Forum (TAF) awards for best practice - the Membership Success Award and the Export Initiative Award.

Of the several hundred trade associations in the UK, only 13 achieve the standard of excellence to win an annual TAF award. The awards dinner will take place on July 29 2009. (more…)

Backdated tax law hits 2,000 freelancers

The government’s decision to retrospectively close a loophole in the UK IsleIR35 of Man double taxation treaty is threatening the livelihoods of more than 2,000 freelancers.

The impact of backdated legislation in the Finance Bill 2008, to deal with affected schemes, has been so “severe” that all other retrospective provisions should be diverted. (more…)

Tech contractor secures full employment rights

IR35A laid-off techie was right to say employment rights entitled him to claim unfair dismissal, despite being engaged as an independent contractor on a project with just a week’s notice.

The ruling, obtained by CUK from the case lawyers, is being seen as a landmark decision, for potentially allowing contractors inside IR35 to claim employment rights from their end- users. (more…)

The worst of the recession is over, but it is too early to say that a recovery is under way, according to a survey published on Tuesday.

The manufacturing and services sectors declined at a much slower pace in the second quarter of the year, but they both still remain in the grip of the downturn, according to a British Chambers of Commerce report that strikes a notably more downbeat note than many other recent business surveys. Contractors inside IR35 may be able to claim employment rights after landmark ruling

IR35Some contractors within IR35 might be able to claim employment rights from their ‘client’, following a landmark ruling this week.

An Employment Tribunal has found that contractor Andrew Tilson was an employee of Alstom Transport, despite billing on an hourly basis through his own contractor limited company and working through an agency. (more…)

Cameron favours small IT contractors

IR35David Cameron, the Conservative leader, has called the government to broaden its base of IT contractors away from large technology companies like Capita.

Rather than simply being reserved for the “the big players”, the Tory leader said contracts for the supply of services to the government should go to smaller outfits.
