AMP 4 delays create staffing shortages for AMP 5 commencement

‘Deja vous’ in the Water Industry as companies, under pressure toeng-on-machinery commence the latest upgrade phase (AMP 5), experience an increasing number of problems in recruiting engineering staff, due to the fact that the AMP 4 phase of upgrades are still being completed.

This is swiftly becoming a repeat of the issues faced within the water industry several years ago when the AMP 2 upgrades flowed into the start of AMP 3 – again causing quite severe recruitment issues.

Joanne Eley, Managing Recruitment Consultant at the Jenrick Engineering Recruitment Agency, has received a sharp increase in calls for Engineers to help combat the problems:

“The calls we are receiving are mostly related to permanent engineering jobs and roles, as the majority of engineers employed within the water industry work on this basis.

All of our clients sound incredibly frustrated with the situation, especially as it is a carbon copy of what happened a few years ago.”

Contract and Interim Engineers could provide the solution

Jo added however, that there are solutions available:

“What I have been suggesting to the water companies is that they consider taking on contract or interim engineers while they wait for the permanent staff to become available.

Essentially, this ensures that the AMP 5 projects can be implemented on schedule.

Due to our experience within this sector we are in a position to supply contractors / interim engineers within the following disciplines; EC&I, Mechanical Design, Process, Project and Commissioning Engineers and also Senior Project and Site Managers with specific experience in Amp projects and water processes and technologies.

This is not a definitive list by any means, but from the feedback I have received, these roles appear to be in particular demand.”
