Explorer to tell business leaders the credit crunch is not their biggest problem - it is climate crunch

Thursday 30th April 2009

Business leaders across the country will hear polar explorer Pen Hadow speaking live from the high Arctic on Friday May 1st, at Business in the Community’s Prince’s May Day Summit on climate change.

Hadow will be telling the business conference attended by HRH The Prince of Wales about his experience of the region which is known to be highly vulnerable to global warming.

Speaking via satellite phone he will tell a gathering of a 150 business leaders in London and hundreds more around the country by satellite link, that beyond the current recession and credit crunch there is another challenge to face, the climate crunch.

Hadow, along with colleagues Martin Hartley and Ann Daniels, is currently trekking and ski-ing across the floating sea ice on a scientific expedition to measure the thickness of the floating sea ice.

“Here in the Arctic Ocean, I’m in one of the most remote places on earth, yet scientists are worried that the ice we’re walking over is not only shrinking in size, but thinning too. One projection says it could be gone as soon as four years time in summer. That’s a real May Day alert and I believe demands everyone’s attention.”

His team has been collecting vital data directly from the surface of the Arctic Ocean’s floating sea ice for scientists seeking to find out exactly
what is happening to the fragile global environment. They have been drilling through the ice to measure the thickness of the ice, snow and atmospheric condition.

“We can do this survey because as explorers we have the necessary skills, but businesses can take actions using their skill and experience too. I have a feeling that our children’s generation will say the climate crunch is the biggest challenge.”

The Prince’s May Day Summit at Billingsgate, in the heart of the City of London, will be relayed in a live broadcast to conferences throughout the
UK and in Canada and can be watched online at www.maydaysummit.com
