Polar explorers surprised by how little permanent Arctic ice they have found so far

The head of a British team walking to the North Pole on a mission to gauge how fast Arctic ice sheets are melting said on Friday he was surprised by how little permanent ice he had found so far.

Pen Hadow and two other adventurers set off in early March on a 1,000-km (620-mile) trek from Canada’s Arctic to the North Pole. The team was set down in an area where scientists had been sure there would be permanent multiyear ice. (more…)

Cost of contracting could escalate

ir35-dshadowThe Cost of using contractors could increase dramatically is the Government refuse to listen to recruiters!

Recruitment figureheads have commented on the proposals to amend the recruitment agency Conduct Regulations.

APSCo believes it could add millions to the cost of using contractors at a time when many organisations are struggling to reduce their staffing costs, while the REC has launched a membership survey.

Revenue Shake up of expenses

IR35The Revenue has kept its word of tackling abuse of expenses in umbrella companies by withdrawing the allowance for staff who stay overnight with friends or family.

In their latest online briefing , officials at the UK tax office said their review of the Friends and Family Allowance found it had “no legal basis for giving tax relief.” (more…)

Demand for Testers increases as the City looks to launch Development Projects planned pre - Credit Crunch

Jenrick CPI is reporting a large increase in the demand for IT matt-hancockprofessionals within the Testing Arena in and around the Greater London Area, in particular within Financial Services.

Matt Hancock comments:
“Although there has been an obvious slow down in the number of roles released to the market most of our clients are still looking to ship development projects planned throughout 2008. Project delivery is still of extreme importance to many of our clients and the launch of various development projects and new application releases are considered extremely important to remain competitive throughout the rest of 2009 and moving into 2010.

We’ve had multiple requirements for Testers on both the permanent and contract side and are looking for a variety of skillsets such as functional testers, non functional testers, system testers, performance testers, regression testers, penetration testers, technical testers and UAT testers.” (more…)

CATLIN ARCTIC SURVEY - ‘Sprite and SeaCat battling the elements’

The BBC posted a website article recently (see link at the footer of this article), stating that two of the core technological innovations currently being used within the Catlin Arctic Surveypen-working-with-sprite were proving to be very unreliable.

This is far from the case, as Simon Harris-Ward, Director of Operations for Catlin Arctic survey, highlights below:

“Given the very extreme conditions they are operating in during the Arctic winter we were always going to face potential difficulties with the array of advanced technology despite our robust testing programme.” (more…)
