Catlin Arctic Survey update - delay due to equipment issues

Catlin Arctic Survey LogoIt has just been confirmed that the Catlin Arctic Survey Ice Team of Pen Hadow, Martin Hartley and Ann Daniels have delayed their planned departure onto the ice tomorrow (Friday 27th February).

Although the weather was favourable, two critically important pieces of equipment showed up as faulty in their final checks, leaving no alternative but to delay until they are repaired and confirmed to be working properly.

Seams on the team’s immersion suits - fundamental to their safety on the ice when swimming between floes - were discovered to be faulty and need repairs.

In addition, some technical problems in the communication between the ice penerating radar and the onsledge computer which will record the data were identified in last minute checks.

As Project Director, Pen Hadow decided that it was unwise to proceed until the corrections could be made. These can both be resolved by the support team in Resolute and are not expected to cause any prolonged delay.

As a result the team will make a decision in tthe next 24 hours about when they will reschedule their departure. It is unlikely to be a long delay.

Updates will appear on our website and we will confirm the new departure date and time as soon as it is known.
