Derivatives I.T. Jobs – a market review and update

The following article has been written to provide an overview of trends in the Derivatives I.T. Jobs market for Canary Wharf and the City of London, for the final quarter of 2007 and beginning of 2008.

It has been compiled by Jane Stevens and Matt Hancock, Senior Consultants, within specialist I.T. recruitment agency, Jenrick CPI Limited, and reflects the market conditions witnesses by Jenrick CPI and not the sector as a whole.

Real changes were seen in the increase in the number of requirements looking for I.T. contractors and pernanent staff within the development arena.

I.T. Contractor Jobs:
Overall we saw a 20% increase in the requirements for I.T. contractors to join development departments within the derivatives market from the same period in 2006 / 2007.

Main languages and skills in demand are within the MS.NET Architecture, such as; C# development skills, with the demand for C++ and Java still high.

I.T. Permanent Jobs:
Similar trends have also been seen across the permanent side of the business, with increased demand for MS.NET Architecture.

I.T. Support Jobs:
The Support side of the business seems to have levelled off, however there has still been continuing demand for open source skills particularly Red Hat Linux as organisations consider alterative operating systems to the more traditional Unix Systems such as Solaris and HP-UX.

I.T. Contractor Pay Rates:
Linked to this, we also witnessed an average rise of 5% - 10% on daily rates across the board. The biggest increases were seen within the derivatives market and especially for those contractors with .NET and C# development skills.

2008 I.T. contractor and permanent derivitives job market:
If you are a developer with skills .NET, C#, Java and or C++ you should find the job market will be particularly buoyant within Canary Wharf and the City of London, as the demand for development staff across the board with strong financial services experience still outweighs supply.
